Bus Service

District 146 provides student transportation services to approximately 1,800 students each school day. Contract transportation services are provided by American School Bus for regular education students and Sunrise Southwest for special education students.

The District provides student transportation services to and from school for students who reside (1) a distance of 1.5 miles or more from their home school, or (2) within 1.5 miles of their home school, but for whom walking would constitute a serious safety hazard, as determined in accordance with standards established by and enforces by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

Transportation routes are intended to provide students with a safe and efficient way to get to and from school. The number of times a bus stops on a route impacts the length of time students are on the bus. In an effort to limit the amount of time students are on the bus, the District is unable to accommodate house stops or additional stops.

When assigning bus stops, the student’s home address is used to determine the closest stop. If the student has a childcare provider who also resides in the District, the District is happy to accommodate you. Please submit a bus stop change request form online with the address of the childcare provider. Change requests may take up to one week to be approved and initiated by the bus company. The District does not provide transportation to daycare centers, however many daycare centers provide their own transportation. Please contact your provider for more information.

Please have students at their assigned stop ten minutes prior to the published pick-up time in order to keep the route and traffic moving smoothly. For pre-k students, parents are required to board the bus and exit the bus with their student.

Please see Chapter 3 of the District 146 Handbook for more details regarding bus safety rules.

Q. What is the best way to contact the transportation department with questions?
A. You may call the district office at 708-614-4500 x3105 or email Sue Campbell.

Q. The bus drives right by my house.  Why can’t it stop at my house?
A.  The bus drives by many students’ houses, but in order for the bus to make it to school in a timely manner, stops are located on corners to serve multiple students.

Q.  I can’t see my child’s bus stop from my house. Can it stop closer?
A.  The District transports approximately 1,800 students every day. We make every effort to locate school bus stops at convenient locations that are also safe for students. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to locate all stops where they can be seen from the house.

Q.  Why do some students have to cross the street to board the bus?
A.  Due to students coming from different directions to a centralized stop, as well as the direction the bus is traveling, some students may have to cross the street. Parents may cross with the student prior to the bus arriving. If crossing after the bus arrives, please wait for the bus to stop traffic before crossing to board the bus.

Q.  My child is starting kindergarten. Will the bus pick my child up in front of the house?
A. No, kindergarten students use the same bus stops as grades 1-5.

Q.  My child is starting pre-kindergarten. Will the bus pick my child up in front of the house?
A. While there is no law mandating door-to-door service; the District does try to provide door-to-door service for students in pre-kindergarten. However, if a stop is already located within a few houses, the student will use that stop.

Q.  How far can a bus stop be from the student’s home?
A.  Bus stops may be up to a ½ mile from the student’s home, though most stops are within a few blocks.

Q.  Why is my student’s bus late?
A.  There are many factors that may delay a bus including weather, traffic, road construction, or other unforeseen circumstances. If you find the bus is consistently late please contact 708-614-4500 x3105 or email Sue Campbell.

Q.  How do I request a change in bus stop?
A.  Please complete the online Bus Route Change Request form. Any change request can take up to two weeks to be approved and started by the bus company.
