Dear District 146 Community Members,

Typically my messages talk about what is happening in our District 146 schools, however I am stirred by what is happening on a national stage. It is shameful that racism is still a real and present evil in the United States. Today, as civil unrest continues, people across the country and in our own neighborhoods are hurt, scared, and angry.

We must recognize that the fight against inequality and racism cannot be fought for just one day, one year, or just when there is another senseless killing. The fight cannot be fought in the street and Statehouses alone. Equality and respect among all of humanity must become embedded in all institutions and in every home. I understand and take very seriously the role that school districts must assume in order to cultivate the skills and competencies that will result in a healthy functioning society.

The District is dedicated to eliminating inequities associated with race and any other form of marginalization. As educators, District 146 has the duty to educate and influence our students so they become caring citizens that are capable of redressing the harm of racism and other forms of oppression, ensuring its elimination from our world. We celebrate and honor the differences among us. They give us strength, make us better people, and benefit all humankind. Equality is among the most basic of human rights, rights that are still frequently denied to many.

I appreciate the partnership we have with all of our families and our greater community. Racism has no place in District 146. Much work lies ahead and District 146 stands in solidarity with all of those who are rightfully demanding justice and equality.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeff Stawick
Superintendent
